Pingree Farms mission of educating Detroit-area children in the agricultural sciences gets a boost this month with the dedication of the new Mahindra Agriscience Learning Center. With the help of a grant from Mahindra’s Urban Agriculture Grant Program, Pingree’s classroom-on-the-farm programs now have a new home in a building rehabbed for that purpose. Pingree Farms is a non-profit educational resource operating a 15-acre Urban Farm near the intersection of 7-Mile and I-75, in Detroit. With a unique-to-the-city animal science laboratory, partnerships with multiple institutions of higher-education, and a host of barnyard animals to work with, Pingree Farms provides city kids with opportunities for hands-on learning.
Pingree Farms has partnered with multiple Detroit area schools to offer hands-on learning in Agriscience. The new Mahindra Agriscience Learning Center classroom will allow for Pingree’s educational programs to serve even more Detroit-area children.
Rick Haas, President and CEO of Mahindra Automotive North America stated, “We were pleased to provide grant funding that supports this program’s development and are humbled by Pingree Farms’ decision to name the Center after our company. My colleagues and I look forward to welcoming the new generation of well-trained growers that this program will create. They will undoubtedly enable the city of Detroit’s vibrant urban agriculture movement to continue to prosper.”
Jim Green, co-founder and Chairperson of the Pingree Farms Board of Directors states, “This partnership with Mahindra is another step towards Pingree Farms’ mission to use agriculture to stimulate curiosity about the sciences and to teach responsibility and other life skills. The addition of the Mahindra Agriscience Learning Center represents a huge leap forward for us.”
The ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held on Tuesday, October 2, at 9:00 am at the new Mahindra Agriscience Learning Center located at 555 E. Hollywood Ave. Detroit, MI 48203. For more information, visit Pingree Farms at pingreefarms.org.
